The Evinrude Ficht hasn’t been manufactured in 20+ years. If any are still running to this day then it’s probably a great engine. Evinrude Ficht engines are STILL popping up on boats all the time. If they’re as bad as all the haters say they are they’d all be extinct by now. 😐

Do your research, buy a boat built by an independent manufacturer! Conglomerate-Corporate high production products will let you down. They have no skin in the game and are only interested in keeping investors happy.

My neighbor just got a Barletta with a merc 350 verado, now they’re all over the bay around us. He traded his cobalt in on it. I have a cobalt so I asked how he liked it. He tossed me the keys and told me to take it out with my family for a lap around the lake! All I can say is that the V10 verado straight up rips! It’s got very similar top end to my cobalt, but it has better hole shot. My friend has a Bennington with twin 150 Yamahas. When he bought it he thought it was silly having the twins over a single 300, then we docked it, and the low speed handling and hole shot is great! It seems like fiberglass becomes less and less common at the lake and now I know why!

In my 6th year owning a 2018 Qwest 24'(30' with front and rear decks) Tri Toon with a 150 Honda. It's been a pretty great boat for our family. It does have its limitations on power/performance. Materials have held up extremely well. The "power steering" system leaves VERY much to be desired as it takes more effort than it should to turn since day 1. Some finishing work seems very low end with the style of sheet metal screws/wood screws holding a few fixtures together. If this boat had a larger outboard (Max 250HP per sticker) and a better power steering system, I would have no regrets recommending it to anyone. If you're the type of person that doesn't mind paying a bit more for a 200 or 250 and are willing to upgrade to an aftermarket power steering system: Go for it.

I don't pay too much attention to bad reliability stories unless its on a brand new engine because one never knows the history of that motor, I remember on one occasion I was launching my boat just got it off the trailer when somebody came across the slipway overtop of my trailer there was a loud metallic sound Ouch! But they just headed off out to sea never ever thought to check out their motor but in all the years that I've been boating I see people abusing their outboards all of the time and most likely because some people don't know what they don't know nor do they make any effort to educate themselves, when you think about that lord only knows what an outboard motor has gone through in its lifetime and then we expect it to be reliable? I always buy brand new and maintain without regard to cost a good motor could save your life so keeping it well maintained is a very smart thing to do I did buy one used outboard many years ago and that was a Yamaha BETO 70 that engine was amazing! I bought it only 2 years old from a Yamaha tech and what an amazing engine that was. A friend of mine has not the latest gen but previous gen to that Mercury Verado I think its a 350 and again it hasn't skipped a beat since new and he puts a lot of hours on that boat and a high percentage of it low speed but it just keeps on going sounds sweet and not too bad on running costs so I might consider a Mercury or a pair on my next boat.

My 2022 drive system is bad on a yamaha 252sd 1.5 years of buying brand new and cables riped the steering system cause the cable where corroded.....smh

Girlfriend had a 1994 bayliner Capri 19’. We put the engine block resealer stuff in it cuz her Ex husband didn’t winterize. been running great for 12 years now. Recently due to inadequate cover the rear transom has deteriorated to the point last August we lost the outdrive and we’ll now she is sitting. It was an awesome boat until that bit of neglect from previous ownership reappeared. No the fit and finish were basic at best. But we were on the water pretty often on it. Thought about paying 3k for the new fiberglass for the rear transom? Opinions: repair or not?

My Bayliner is dependable, safe, easy and nice looking. My family has had so many good times on Lake of the Woods!!!

I have a 17' fishing boat with a 40 horse outboard. I've had it for 27 years, I've redone the interior twice, keeping it looking fresh. The last refit of the boat I increased the casting deck size and added dedicated storage for rods and fishing gear making it the perfect bass fishing boat for me and one or two friends. I recently added a super clean low hour 10 year old Bayliner 195 to the stable. Say what you want about Bayliners, but I've had it for 3 seasons now and it's been a great boat. The 4.3 sips gas, it pulls tubes great. I can comfortably entertain friends and family on it for a full day on the water. To your point of not spending too much, I get to enjoy it 3-4 days a week because it doesn't cost as much to operate. I also regularly drive a friend's brand new Natique Paragon so he can surf. I honestly enjoy driving all 3 boats about the same because each boat has a specific purpose and each boat is perfect for what we are doing.

Before buying my current boat i watched hours of your video's. I thought to myself, what is it that I'm looking to accomplish. I took all the different pieces of advice you had and i couldn't be happier, my family also loves the boat.

I’ve owned my 36FT Wellcraft St Tropez for 11 years now and I do all the repairs maintenance etc including fiberglass work when needed and I’m in the process of replacing both engine and doing several other upgrades and I have no regrets with my ownership and the memories I’ve made with my nephews and friends too . Those memories are priceless!

Got our third boat recently. Got the 6.2 v8, got the extended platform, got the through hull exhaust, got the wake tower with big speakers. Some young guy spent the money, we bought it from him reasonably. Be patient, get what you want. I won’t own another one without the captains call. I’m 53 and I ain’t gonna miss out on the fun.

This guy fails to mention engine costs. A 300hp outboard is about $30K. I can buy 3 mercruiser 5.7 engines for that cost. Another thing that turns me off with outboards is that big engine in the back of the boat. I keep a big cooler on my swim platform and works perfect. Another is trolling with lines and obstruction issues fishing. I'll take my Mercruiser V8. Parts are cheaper too.

I agree on the riding on the bow thing. It scares me to death. I just want to holler "get those people off the bow"!

Would you go hydraulic on a 60hp if you’re just trying to stop dealing with a stuck steering cable every season?

Big boats are too much work

Two regrets I have had during boat buying… (1) not doing more research and buying a boat that would be more appropriate for my needs. AKA getting one too small in length or width. (2) tied closely into number 1. Buying a boat with the intent to “Repair” or “modify”into something it isn’t. There is no perfect do it all boat. Sooner one accepts that the happier you will be with your particular boat. (Also true about life 😂)

Between the costs of buying the boat, maintenance, insurance and gas I’m not interested in buying a boat. I have kayacks and the best part is no work needed in them other than cleaning them. I would rather rent a motorboat boat for the day 1-2 times a year and not have to dealing with boat ownership.

The first rule I learned with the first boat I owned was to make sure the drain plug is in. Never forgot about that one.

So as I'm watching this I'm realizing I'm a pretty good boat captain. Unfortunately on my local lakes people are morons and do some of the dumbest things I've ever seen on the water. I most often times have to just back out of the throttle to let the idiots do whatever it may be they're going to do.

Boats went up so much during Covid. Boat makers were just rolling in cash. The Covid boat buyers are now trying to dump their boats. Many are wanting way too much and I think they are in the "denial" phase. Some time this fall or winter they should be in the "acceptance" phase. I'll wait.

Ive always wanted a boat but its too intimidating for me. Ive never launched a boat or anything and I'm afraid of looking foolish as a struggling newbie. I guess this just isnt for me

So that's the absolute truth about the older 2 strokes and the plugs. I grew up boating with my dad and grandfather who both had 2 stroke outboard and both of them carried an extra set of plugs. My first boat had a mercury 65 which was about a 76 model and I always had extra plugs with me. It was just part of boating. I swapped to sterndrives after that 1st boat and I've never looked back. I will say these new outboards are pretty impressive.

Master Technician should know that the 75 - 115 is a 2.1 liter motor and the 150 is a 3.0 liter engine

I worked on a couple of bayliners dont think I will ever own one poorly made ones I work on was farly newer look like they were slapped together
